1.         Introduction

Nowadays, mobile technology is developing rapidly because
having many of the users are using smartphone. According to statistic of
Statista Inc. (2017), the number of smartphone users increased from 1.57
billions in 2014 to 2.32 billions in 2017 which is forecast to increase
steadily in the future. Along with this, having a numerous mobile system has
been developed like Android, iOS, RIM and Microsoft. However, the most popular
system is Android OS that sold over 1 billions units of smartphone which
followed by iOS, with over 200 million smartphones in 2016 (Statista Inc., 2017). Android,
formerly meaning “robot”, is a mobile operating system running on the Linux
Kernel which created by Google. iOS (known as iPhone OS) was developed only for
Apple products. The research is written to provide the advantages of Android
that iOS does not have.

Background information

2.1.1. Android OS and Play Store

Android OS is a mobile operating
system created by Android Inc. until Google took over this in 2005 that aim to
enter the mobile phone industry (Goyal, Bhatheja & Ahuja, 2016). In 2007,
Android was revealed to the world by Google Inc.. At that time, this would be
open source that mean anyone could develop for Android, or make any changes
to the Android source code, without legal permission from Google. This decision
revolutionized the mobile phone industry (Yaseen & Tariq, 2012).  According to statistic of Statista Inc.
(2017), Android sold over 1 billions units of smartphone in 2016, became is the
largest installed base on all mobile operating systems.

            Play Store or Google
Store is the shop for the Android apps that Google, after they test, posted
apps that are used in smartphone by download on Store.

                        2.1.2. iOS and App Store

iOS or iPhone operating system is a
mobile system developed only for Apple’s products like iPhone, iPad and iPod. The release of iPhone
on June 29, 2007 was the beginning of iOS history. At that time, this mobile
system did not have a name until the release of iPhone SDK in 2008. Before
then, Apple marketing literature simply stated that the iPhone runs “OS
X”, a reference to iPhone OS’s parent, Mac OS X (Yaseen & Tariq,
2012). In 2017, the operating system had 710 million active devices.

App Store is a store provide apps
for iPhone’s user  whether they are free
of cost or paid. All the iOS apps after successful testing by Apple are
published or posted on the app store so that all other apple users can download
them according to their needs. Apple takes 30 percent of all revenue generated
through apps and 70 percent goes to the app publisher. Many of the apps also
have in-app purchases means user have to purchase a particular feature

of the app by paying some money on it.

2.2. Market Analysis

                        2.2.1. Smartphone

Smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile
operating system, with more advanced computing capability and
connectivity than a feature phone. As we known that iOS run
only on Apple’s product like iPhone. So user can only buy iPhone with the high
price, the lowest price is $39. In contrast, Android OS have many choices for
user. For example, user can buy a smartphone with only $9.9 named Pixi GLITZ
which have a 3.4-inch display, a 1.3GHz processor and a rear 2-megapixel camera
(Roston, 2017).

2.2.2. Play Store vs App Store

with development of smart phones, the app markets have been improved vastly
with more and more features adding. Each of OS has own app market. Android has
Play Store whereas iOS has App Store. However, Play Store has more app than App
Store. In 2017, Google has about 3.5 million available app in Play Store while
App Store has 2.5 million (Statista Inc., 2017). Apple App market is exclusive
to Apple Hardware users only while Android has many manufactures which use
their OS and their App market giving Play Store very high number of users.

2.3. Architecture

                        2.3.1. User interface

               There are many
different feature between Android OS and iOS but Android has a enormous advantage
is that the user can customize his experience in many ways, there is a
possibility to install various launchers to change the look of the user
interface, a possibility to set up more backgrounds in the background and
shortcuts. This is clearly shown by the fact that Android’s home screen can be
swapped out for something better. If user do not like this picture’s home
screen or lock screen, they can change by any picture in internet which they
want. Another way to customize is Using a
different messaging app for SMS. Unlike iOS, you can also install a different
messaging client and set it as the default app to handle all of your text
messages like Messenger (Facebook) or Hangout (Google) (Hoffman, 2017).

2.3.2. Storage

These days,
the personal data of people could be unbounded but the ability to remember of
people is limited. So one of the most thing that makes Smartphones are more and
more popular is using to be saved that. The developers try to make the storage
that is larger and larger. Google Drive offers a full 15 GB of cloud storage,
while iCloud only gives 5 GB, which is not nearly enough for all of a person’s
documents or photos. If you want to upgrade your iCloud storage, again Apple is
less generous than Google. It’ll cost you $100 per year for an extra 50 GB with
iCloud, and only $24 per year (at $2 per month) from Google for twice as much storage
(Schmid, 2017).
