A major problem in our world is the waste of materials building up on our planet. Plastic is one of the most harmful materials to the environment if nothing is done about it. Within the past 60 years, there has been a mass production of plastic and has continued to accelerate. According to National Geographics, “Of the 8.3 billion metric tons that has been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons have become plastic waste.”  Plastic affects most parts of the globe. It harms marine life, it harms land animals and it even harms humans. According to Ocean Crusaders, “100,000 marine creatures a year die from plastic entanglement and these are the ones found. Approximately 1 million seabirds also die from plastic.” Landfills are a way of recycling all different materials like plastic, metals, wood, etc… Landfills are disposal sites which are used to dump all sorts of wastes. Inside landfills, there is only a small bit of moisture and oxygen which means that the trash breaks down very slowly, this causes a lot of build up in the amount of trash which is in the landfill. Landfills are not very environmental friendly however. This is because all the trash in the landfill creates methane gas. Methane gas is about 20 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. This means the landfills plays a large role in the enhanced greenhouse effect which is extremely dangerous for the Earth. Web. 22 Jan. 2018. .2.A solution to the problem of plastic waste would be to recycle the plastic waste by breaking it down and turning into something else which can then be used again. Since plastic is non-biodegradable it means that plastic is unable to be broken down naturally by the environment. This means in order for the plastic waste to be non-harmful to the environment, us humans must take action. According to Conserve Energy Future, a good way of recycling plastic is to melt it down into small pieces and then form a new product out of the plastic which has been wasted. This is a long process, first the plastic waste is collected and sorted by their resin content and their color. This process helps to making sure that all contaminants have been eliminated. Humans have built special design machines which can sort the plastic according to these factors in order to make the process quicker. The plastic is then broken into smaller pieces as they are shredded. This means they are cut into small plastic flakes which are then after cleaned in order to remove all of the remaining contamination and bacteria. The plastic is now finally passed through multiple equipment to be separated again in the plastic resin types. After all this they are melted. They are melted using high heat machines which allows the plastic to be remolded into new and different shapes. The equipment used is designed to melt the plastic while ensuring to not break it down. Lastly the melted plastic is compressed into small pellets known as nurdles. Now the plastic is ready to be reused and can also be redesigned into other plastic products. Some of the most common recycled plastics are, Polyethylene Terephthalate, High Density Polyethylene and Polyvinyl Chloride. According to Thomasnet, the machinery used for sorting have different parts to it. Sensors: these are devices which detect the different specific polymers in the plastic using x-ray or infrared sensing. Ejectors: Uses air ejection to physically group the plastic. Computing Systems: These systems help to identify and sort the materials. 3. My solution is highly effective. Using my solution and method of breaking down the plastic and then proceeding to reform it into a new product is ensure a provision of a sustainable source of raw materials. As the plastic pellets are rebuilt into something new, this means that there is no need for new raw materials which ensures that there is less need to waste more materials on creating more plastic products. It provides sustainable sources of raw materials. It also helps reduces environmental problems since it reduces the amount of plastic which is put into the system. My solution can help reduce landfill problems as well since it, again, reduces the amount of plastic waste which means it reduces the amount of plastic sent to the landfills to be buried. Producing new plastic products from raw materials is not very environmentally friendly since it causes more and more plastic waste to be produced into the system while using recycled raw materials means that the amount of plastic will never increase but endlessly be reproduced. According to The Balance, “Since 2005 PET sheets for thermoforming in the UK can contain 50 percent to 70 percent recycled PET” Which shows that the success of this method is increasing as researchers figure out ways to use more recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) in plastic products.4.Environmental impacts of recycling plastic:The environment is greatly affected by plastic waste. This means that recycling the plastic in order to use it to make another plastic product would be great in the short-term view although it would not be in the long-term view. One perspective on this topic is that as we recycle the plastic waste which we produce, in order to just create new plastic products, we are not only limiting the amount of plastic which is produced into the world but also creating new products using recycled raw materials. This means we need to spend less natural resources on creating plastic which is great for the environment. Although this seems like a great solution, I think that it is not a worthy solution since it has bad effects on the environment in the long term. As we continue to recycle plastic, we are encouraging plastic to be created and as we need more plastic, there will continue to be more and more being produced with raw materials. Instead I think that we should focus on using less plastic, for example straws. There is no real need for straws but they still make a lot of the plastic which is produced. Although this is more ethical, I think that even my scientific solution is not good enough to be used, I think the best way to stop the problem of plastic waste is to not encourage people to produce more plastic by telling them a lot of it is recycled but to instead reduce the amount of plastic we use daily. Furthermore, the recycling of plastic is not a very widespread topic as it is expensive because of the amount of electricity and power it takes, it also causes pollution which is even worse for the environment.
