The Turks refuse to call the genocides what they are, genocides. America’s stance on the situation is that the matters should be left to the Armenians and the Turks. Barack Obama did not acknowledge the genocide during his two terms. More than 20 nations acknowledge the Armenian Genocide and condemn it and most of the US accepts that as well. The Turkish government does not acknowledge that the genocides occurred and even try to cover it up. On April 12th Pope Francis said that the mass killings by the Turks during World War I was the first genocide of the 20th century. In response, Turkey recalled their Vatican city ambassador and said that the popes’ words were null and void.Senator Obama acknowledged the Armenian Genocide and called it a situation where they had seen constant denial. While being a senator Barack Obama stated, “The Armenian genocide is not an allegation, a personal opinion, or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence,”. During President Obama’s two-term run as president, he failed to acknowledge the genocides and felt that it was best if the Armenians and Turks worked it out. Turkey still continues to deny the even to today. The US does not officially recognize that the killings were a genocide but most of the 48 of the 50 states in the US have accepted that there was a Genocide. Alabama and Mississippi are the only two U.S. states that have not yet officially condemned the Armenian Genocide.More than 100 years have passed since the genocides have occurred yet no actions have been taken to acknowledge them in Turkey. The countries that do acknowledge the genocides want Turkey to recognize that their numbers weren’t inflated and that it did in fact happen.
