Global Inequality Analysis This report will cover the short Blue Elephants – a documentary about migrant workers in the Malaysian electronics industry. The documentary shows how the migrants that comes from Indonesia, Nepal and other countries comes as contract workers to work for a well-known company’s such as HP, Dell and Intell and how they face a discrimination that ends them up with getting engaged in heavy debts just to obtain permits that might grant them a stay in Malaysia for a maximum of five years. It also shows how they accepted the bad living condition that they are in and how if they got ill or pregnant they got to be sent back home for their own expenses (BuyITFair). This paper will define the four major sociological paradigms and it will discuss how each of them applies to the documentary. It will also provide which paradigm is most useful for the working and living condition of migrant workers in Malaysia. The four major sociological paradigms are functionalist, conflict, interactionist and feminist. Functionalist perspective is one of the major theoretical perspectives in sociology and “it is a theory that focuses on the macro-level of social structure, rather than the micro-level of everyday life” (Crossman, Ashley). Which means the societies function in ways that benefit society in effectiveness and efficiency and that makes the social formation stable. It is a theory that insures the equilibrium which is the equality between any powers or influences and also to ensure that the people in the society have shared goals, roles and norms. In Blue Elephant, functionalism theory was seen through the advice of different migrants that travelled to different countries for benefits, especially in developing countries, where people are willing to leave their homes and families wishing to make a good amount of money and live a better life in a more industrialized country. But instead, they end up with unfair salaries and highly demanding job duties. For example, it was shown how their work permits are temporary, how they had limited period of time to pay off debt, and pregnant and health problems migrants were sent back to their home country (BuyITFair). Conflict theory focuses more on the negative aspects of society and emphasizes social control. So basically, it’s a theory that finds the most social conflict between groups that have potential inequality such as economic, racial, political, religious, etc. (Obo). It is different than functionalism in the way of how it is a theory that focuses on how the social system only works for a few people in society, where functionalism theory focuses more on what factors in a society will allow the society to grow cohesively. However, both theories support the fact that there are some people have more money than the others and more power over the others but only one focuses on the imbalance of power. The functionalist, support the idea that the imbalance of money and power is what keeps the society in order, where conflict theory supports the idea that it is the flaw in the social system (Crossman, Ashley). In Blue Elephants, the conflict perspective theory was seen through how the factory/ labour force owners have high authority over the working poor, in another word controlling workers and threaten them and focus only on the company needs. It was also shown through how migrants didn’t realize these problems and they were still falling into this trick of the labour force and that they didn’t have anywhere to escape so they are forced to listen to their managers and just continue to be treated poorly. Not only that but also it was shown how they are facing an ill-mannered treatment, by not recognizing the needs of these migrant workers and that they are often treated less than human. The documentary also showed how the migrants workers are having a hard time making enough money to give to their families and that they are barely making money (BuyITFair). Interactionist theory is a theoretical perspective that focuses on social process. It is the study of how individuals act with the society and how we communicate with one another as well as how we act and make choices regarding our behaviour that proceeds from how we interpret situations. In other words, we are said to be social actors and must adjust our behaviour based on the actions of other social actors (Cook, Posted by Sam). In Blue Elephants, the example of interactionist theory was evident by how the migrant workers were been told to provide false information of how much time they are spending at work and on work, and how much money they will make. It was seen by how the migrants when they first come to a different country, they do not know what they are set up for, do not have enough knowledge skills and that they are trained and told to follow a specific job. They are also forced to work hard and fast or they will get fired or punished by the managers. The interactionist was evident also through how the migrants do not have the language skills to communicate or interact with people but they are trying to learn the language and work hard to meet the expectation and needs of the labour force because they need money. However, even though they were treated badly and they are having a bad condition live they often choose not to go back to their home country either because they come from poor countries and because of the lack of opportunities in their country (BuyITFair). Feminist theory is a theory that believes that everyone is equal and there is no difference between both genders and that both genders deserve equal rights, equal treatment and equal opportunity (Ltd, White Fuse Media). In Blue Elephants, the feminist theory was shown when it showed how even women were travelling to Malaysia for work and how they left their families to achieve the goals that they wanted to. Even though it was not the work that they imagined, they still tried to live in the bad conditions that they were in, and to work hard. This shows how they had the opportunity to leave their country for work which shows how they had the right to work, and how they were treated equally to men. Besides that, labour workers should have the rights and stand for what they believe, because they have families back home where they could be living, but do not even go back because the lack of opportunities and even when they travelled they didn’t have the right to stand for what they believe because of the way they were treated (BuyITFair). As a conclusion, and after identifying, and analyzing the four sociological perspectives, functionalist, conflict, interactionist and feminist. The theories that stand out the most as being closely related to the working and living conditions are the conflict perspective and the interactionist perspective and out of these two theories, the top paradigm is the conflict theory. Personal opinion, conflict theory is the most useful sociological perspective, because it showed the mostly what the migrant’s workers are facing in Malaysia and the ideas of it, based on what was provided in the documentary, are very much a reality. The fact that the points that were discussed earlier, were the migrant workers are not being paid enough and a livable wage, even though the companies are doing enough profit to pay the livable wage for the workers, shows how the human rights are not been applied to these migrant workers and that there are no social and economic inequalities between the workers in the company.
