In any encyclopedia
of modern ballet, the name of the dancer Marta Graham will stand in a place of
honor. It can be called revolutionary. Graham’s dance school and its technique
became the basis for modern choreography and influenced the development of
ballet all over the world.  Agnes de Mille (dancer and choreographer) met
Mart Graham after her success of musical show ‘Oklahoma’. She thought that this
work was average as compare to her previous works, but she got success from her
average work.  Agnes de Mille talked to
Graham about this and she said-

“There is vitality, a life force, energy, a
quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is
only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it,
it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world
will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is
nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It
is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel
open.”

She taught her that it’s not your job to
judge your work; your job is to create and share.

Comparing ourselves with other people is our habit. It was fixed in us from
childhood. In kindergarten and in the school, teachers set the example of
the best boys and girls. Parents expected us to be no worse than the best
in the group, school, and college. We were always compared with our
neighbors, with relatives, close friends.

Comparison links to dependency on others

When we begin to compare ourselves, what we compare
becomes dependent on how we evaluate and perceive others around us. If in the showroom the manager sells
cars more than all others, for example 100 cars per month, he experiences an
emotional rise and pride in himself. In the salon a newcomer is set to
work, which starts selling 110 cars a month. And although the first
manager sells the same 100 machines a month, as before, he blames himself for
not being able to do anything in this life, his self-esteem falls, and he
begins to envy the newcomer. Comparison only creates a false sense of
importance, and it is better to avoid it.

Be
yourself

The first thing you need to do to stop
comparing yourself to others is to love yourself as you are. You may think
that you are imperfect, but that’s what makes us human. Falling in love
with yourself, you will love your life. You will find inner peace and tranquility,
accepting yourself with all your shortcomings.

Being yourself does not mean
living in a shell without sticking out into the outside world, and being unable
to improve your life. To be yourself is to set achievable goals for yourself
and go to them.
