Ever Since, the
educational institutions were implemented, then started the controversies of
sex education and this has always been a debate topic among families and even
religious communities. It is trusted that incidents of school-age youngsters
taking part in sexual practices are expanding, as the media constantly reports
that the times of these youngsters are diminishing. Rivals to sex education
feel that the courses themselves enable this pattern. The truth, in any case,

In the recent times,
changes to Sexual Education Curriculum became a huge discussion topic among

curriculum was considered as a set of new rules that didn’t not meet any
religious values or morals. It has been 17 years that the sex education
curriculum in Ontario has changed and hence there were not much guidance given
to the teachers regarding what must be taught from then. The main concern
regarding the implementation of the new curriculum was that the children had to
learn age-inappropriate topics like masturbation at an early grade. Even though
the parental protests continued to grow Kathleen Wynne ignored their voices to
bring out the new changes in the sex education systems.
As we dig deep in to this discussion, we
understand that implementing this new curriculum has both positive and negative
impact on the students.
Sex education is
educating the children about sexuality, sexually transmitting diseases,
contraceptive methods and molding the children with the moral values of
respecting an individual’s feelings and their gender.
In today’s world we have access to all
information’s at our fingertips and hence children who have queries or concerns
regarding the sexual topics go behind the internet websites or pornography that
may sometimes leave them with a wrong information, and it is truly because of
the discomfort of the parents to discuss these topics among children that
drives them to other media.
Prevention is always better than cure and
hence it is very important to educate and create an awareness among the
children about the child sexual abuse and to differentiate between a good touch
and a bad touch way before they get into such situations.
It is very important that we promote sex
education at school levels in order to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies
and also lessening the increase in STD that the children may not be aware of
but in reality when parents and religious communities raise their voice against
the change of the curriculum they forget to understand the fact that the TV
shows or movies that their children watch even though limits the underaged
children from watching these heavily portrayed sex scenes these demonstrations
are still accessible to those elderly teenagers and this may leave a footprint
in their minds that these are casual and harmless.
If sexual education is provided at the
early stages of schooling it might let the children grow with a respect and show
equality among all genders. As children are more curious to know about the opposite
gender, enhancing sexual education can help them understand the changes that
they may see at their different phases of ages and to reduce the desires of
exploring the changes in opposite gender.
It is an understood fact that the
teenagers of this new generation have turn sexually active and hence sexual
education can help them understand the sex abstinence at an early stage.
Firstly, the new curriculum includes the
changes in the teaching pattern from grade 1, keeping this in mind it is too
much for a grade 1 student to study the clinical terms of the body parts, when
asked it was told by the authorities that this was included so that the
children could communicate with others in case of any need or injuries.
Usually, teachers who are appointed to
teach these sex topics either have vague ideas about the topics or they may not
be very comfortable in giving out the speech in front of a class as they are
not used to this new way of teaching.
In Christianity, were self sex or
self-pleasure is considered as a sin, we teach the students of grade 6 about
masturbating to explore one’s body parts. These thoughts are wildly against the
moral values of the religion. And having sex with a same gender may be
considered as a broad thinking of respecting an individual’s feeling, but the
religion we believe in teaches us that having sex with the same gender is a sin
and it’s a fault when viewed spiritually. So, these 2 different thoughts may
leave the children in the confusions to make the right choice which may even
end up losing the religious faith or values.
If not taught properly students may end up
in loosing their interest in learning these topics as by how subject matters it’s
always exciting for the students and they might still be subject to
discussed and noted above regarding the cons of this topic it is completely
understandable why parents and religious communities are raising their voice
against this new curriculum but opponents to sex education must accept the fact
that the unprotected sex could lead to dangerous illness and hence it is very
important that we start educating the students from the schools and make them
aware of the after effects engaging in unprotected sexual activities. Parents
could also meet up with the teachers handling these topics to understand the
content that they are covering and hence trying to get rid of the discomfort
that they may have in discussing these sex topics with their children at home.
So, guidance from both home and school would bring out a better output from the
students and this would also help in decreasing the number parents who might be
opposing new sex education system curriculum. Finally, I completely accept the
fact that the children must be educated about these topics, but we also need
consider the age of a student. So, my only suggestions to the concerned
authorities would be to educate and bring an awareness among the students by
designing the curriculum in such a way that children at grade 1, 2 or 3 are
been taught not too much for their age but things that they need to be aware of.
