Laurence achieved if we do not listen

Laurence Sterne once said, “respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners.” When we respect our society, we are one step closer to being the best we can. Many people agree that my generation, our generation, is going downhill when it comes to morals. Many find that in order to get what we want, we need to rebel to prove points but that is exactly what makes us childish. As Maya Angelou once said, “if we lose love and self-respect for each other, this is how we finally die.” With this, our society is incapable of being able to function without respect. We do not gain by being disrespectful, instead, we damage our relationship with our elders, our religion, “we die”.A more targeted age group that seems to show less respect than others is the 13-18 age range. By this age, we seem to think we are mature teenagers and young adults, at least that is what we think. At this point in our lives, we want to be treated like adults who can make their own decisions, not needing the elders of our society to protect them from dangers in our world. But when we do not get what we think we deserve, we rebel, we want our society to listen to us, but how can this be achieved if we do not listen to society if we do not show respect? By rebelling, we are showing our elders that we have not matured yet. Because of our poor decisions, our elders limit us from privileges that we consider to be appropriate for our age group. Often this leads to unnecessary actions as we believe our elders are unfair. We damage our relationship with them. As consequences lead to more consequences, lack of respect further leads to the damage of our religion. Our religion is an important aspect of who we are as a whole, whether it is Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. Many of these religions have drastically different values, beliefs, and morals. When there is no respect between religions, conflicts can arise as not every religion agrees with every other. This leads to the loss of a peaceful society and the society can no longer function. Moreover, when societies start to oppose of certain aspects in other religions, they contradict their own beliefs. For example, as one of my Christian beliefs, forgiveness is very important. When forgiveness is absent from our lives, we are punished. Therefore, if Christians were to not forgive those of other religions, we would be acting against our Christian beliefs. As a result, we would be damaging our relationship with our religion when our society shows no respect for other religions. What is the point of presidential leaders, teachers, parents, elders, government, laws if we needeth bother to show respect and would rather ignore them? What good does it do if those that guide us, only receive nothing but disrespect when educating us on basic morals? Common sense itself answers those questions. There is no point when we make the decision to go against our morals and what we are taught. Disrespecting those attempting to educate us hinders our learning process. Therefore, as we stop learning as a society, we stop moving forward. Eventually “we die”. We die in a sense that because our society consists of various people that play different roles if we cannot play our roles as people, our society becomes non-functional. Those without respect become their own individual society, doing as they please, leading to what is not. If leaders are ignored, there are no longer educated politicians to follow. If we ignore teachers, we don’t gain knowledge. If we ignore parents, we get through life the hard way. If we ignore laws, our world becomes as dangerous as hell. Our society has died, it cannot function, we suffer. In the end, we lose. Our society is incapable of functioning without respect, and we suffer the consequences. We damage opportunities we could have enjoyed, our relationships with our elders, our religion, leading to ultimate “death”. Respect is nowadays often considered a luxury, rather than a common courtesy, we take it for granted and forget about it. We create pain for our society, our world, and those we love when we could make lives easier. If our society had respect, we would be free of many problems today. If our society had respect, we would not “die” as a society, we would live.
