organizations, institutions, and teams prosper thus maximizing
their efficiency and ability in achieving

set of goals. After reading the Peterson G. Northouse book
on Leadership and learning about the

different leadership styles. I felt that here are two
leadership styles that I believe best suit me: adaptive

and ethical leadership models. To begin with, adaptive
leadership is about enabling change by building

and giving individuals and the organization the necessary
capacity to thrive. An adaptive leader,

therefore, mobilizes those behind to thrive and tackle
challenges that come their way. Adaptive, as the

name suggests, means to do anything possible to survive
through the worst moments so as to thrive.

The bottom line in this case is to arm yourselves with the
necessary tools and processes so as to build an

 adaptive environment
in the organization (Northouse, 2012). Generally, there are three components of

 adaptation that can be
applied to any organization, institution, or life n general: preserve the
elements

that will ensure the survival; change or remove unnecessary
elements; create new elements that will

make the organization thrive and bloom into the future.

Ethical leadership, on the other hand, is about demonstrating the right
kind of conduct that is

generally appropriate and acceptable at the organization at
in any other area of life. Apparently, there

are three main things that an ethical leader ought to show.
First, an ethical leader sets the example.

There is the adage that says actions speak louder than
words. According to Northouse (2012), the leader

 is supposed to be the
champion of honest and ethical behavior so that the employees can follow.

Second, an ethical leader promotes ethics at the workplace.
Every organization has a set of codes of

ethics that everyone ought to follow. The leader should be a
promoter of these codes of ethics. Last,

ethical leadership is about good communication. An ethical
leader should know how to communicate

effectively to the employees without feeling anxious.
Overall, therefore, being an ethical leader should

be about being open, fair, trustworthy, respectful, and
compassionate.

               The
following are some of the characteristics that define me as a leader. I am
confident, honest,

  passionate,
respectful, genuine, fair, and armed with excellent persuasion abilities.
Without

 confidence, there is
no leadership. To begin with, confidence means that I believe in my abilities
as a

leader; therefore, I am capable of committing to the
decisions that I make and also own them especially

when I make mistakes. With confidence, I am also able to
instill buoyancy in the people that I lead so

 that they are able to
work on their dreams and make them realities. Secondly, as an honest person, I

have become legitimate in the eyes of the people that I
lead. I have used honesty in the past to build

trust with the people that I work with because they know
that what I tell them is true and they should

follow without fear of contradiction. Therefore, I strive to
be very honest about the way I feel or how I

view certain topics.

                 Passion
is also something that I have as a leader. I am passionate about everything
that I do

whether it is in my life or at the workplace. With passion,
you will learn to love what you do and not see

it as a challenge. Therefore, I believe that every other
leader should learn to cultivate passion in their

 lives and at the same
time be respectful to everyone whether it is the lowest ranked employee or

someone earning less than you. I am also genuine in all my
action and strive to be fair in making

decisions that affect others. Being fair calls for a balance
of the cost and benefits of a decision. Some

 people just make
decisions without looking at the consequences, which I believe is unfair. Last,

persuasion is very important because I am able to implore
people to follow my goals.

                Most of
the qualities about a good leader I have already covered above; however, there
is

something else that I believe is missing. I believe that a
good leader is someone who knows how to get

 his or her followers
to believe and follow in his leadership is philosophy. Umar Al Khattab was one
of

the most powerful leader in history I admired his leadership
style which were mainly based on

adaptation and ethics.  People naturally followed his vision because
they believe in him as a leader.

President Barack Obama is also another good leader that
knows how to rally people behind him. This

requires teamwork though, which I sometimes lack. Given the many demands in the journey of Public

health leadership, the other style
that I would love to try is team leadership because it has been a

challenge to me for some time now.
Given the nature of my previous carrier where I worked as a plastic

surgeon teamwork is something I do
not master. I understand that my new path today in public health

is very dynamic with people from different cultures and
ethnic groupings. To bring these people with

 their differences
together will definitely require a leader who has a good sense of teamwork and
how to

 build successful
teams. Definitely, teamwork fosters synergy while at the same time it

helps people to learn and become creative.

                When
we have people put together in a pool, they will have different and unique
ideas that can

help themselves as well as the organization prosper. To use
a good example, there will be a great

difference between teamwork and individual work when
presenting a project to the board, for instance.

When there is teamwork, it is easy to finish the project
very fast because the team members know their

strength and weaknesses; therefore, they know where to help
one another so as to finish the project

time and then present it. In addition each team member will
put their own styles in the projects which

will make it stand out. Therefore, team work this is
something that I believe is very important nowadays

and I should be able to learn more about it.

            At the
same time, however, I know that there are challenges that come with building
teams.

Taking responsibility can be a big issue as well as dealing
with non-cooperative members. These are

some of the conflicts and challenges that come with building
teamwork. As a leader, therefore, one

 should understand the
challenges and know how to deal with them appropriately. As I mentioned

earlier, I believe that communication is very important here
to get your points across. Some leaders may

assume that team members understand their roles, but this
leads to lack of clarity on what team

members are expected to do.

                    Definitely,
I believe that my leadership philosophy will make me succeed in my public
health

 career. There are
three models that now stand out from my leadership philosophy: adaptive
leadership,

 ethical leadership,
and teamwork. These are three aspects that are very important in my current
field.

Public health is an area that often face challenges some
precedented others unprecedented and one will

require adaptive skills so as to go through tough times. For
instance, a new epidemic might hit a certain

population and then you are given the leadership role to
ensure that you manage the situation. In such a

scenario, it is important to be armed with an adaptive
mindset to so as to deal with issues that you

might never have dealt with before. With ethical leadership
as well, I will be able to ensure that my

colleagues that I work with follow ethical standards and
procedures when dealing with the health of our

clients.

              As a
matter of fact, ethics is essential in my field, and it requires both code of
ethics and

personal conviction to do the right thing. This is where
personal values come in; one needs to do the

 right at all times
without having to be told. Last, teamwork is very important in public health
because

the healthcare industry these days has become so dynamic and
requires healthcare professionals to

work in collaboration . Working in teams will ensure that we
provide the best possible health care to our

community. However, this can only be possible if team
leaders know how to bring individuals together

and then tap into their different strengths so as to make
the best out of a situation.

            Remarkably,
my personality resembles that of a commander; I believe in myself and in my

capabilities. Most importantly, I believe that nothing is
impossible in this world and that there is always

a way. If there is no clear way, then we should make one.
Definitely, this has had a huge impact on the

way I view leadership. Just like the way a commander behaves
in the battlefield is the way a leader

should behave at the organization. A commander is someone
who is confident that he will beat the

opponent. Therefore, he will come up with ways to win and
also be adaptive to the jungle out there.

              A
commander also needs to know the aspect of teamwork because soldiers often work
in teams

just like in public health. This time round, the enemy
comprises of diseases and epidemics that continue

to plaque our society for a long time. Challenges that
affect the public health sectors are no longer

confined to one place, they have become global. They have
also become political and cut across many

 other sectors.
Cholera, malaria, smallpox, mumps, measles, Ebola, and a number of other
unknown

diseases have killed many people than even actual conflicts
where people die of bullets. The way these

diseases can spread requires a new way of thinking about
public health. A bird flu discovered in China,

for instance, can spread to many other parts of the world is
care is not taken. This is where public health

from a global perspective is required. With my type of
personality and the values, I will be able to make

a good leader for a long time to come. Confidence, honesty,
passion, respect, genuineness, and fairness

are a very important aspect of being a leader.

              Notably,
leadership is not a static thing but rather dynamic in the sense that one needs
to

constantly cultivate leadership. With this in mind, I have a
plan that will help me improve my leadership

capabilities and positions every time I am at work. After
graduation, I intend to use my doctorate

degree in Public Health
and work in one of the global organizations like Red Cross, UNICEF, and
WHO.

These are huge organizations that tackle public health
issues from a leadership perspective.

 With Red Cross, for
instance, I will be able to work on my leadership skills in the different work

environment that will enable me to grow my team leadership
skill.  My five-year goal is still
attached to

working with one of the organizations in my home country
Libya where I hope to be an adaptive and

ethical leader in one of those global organization. To
achieve this, however, I will need to be innovative

to come up with ways of improving the lives of the people
that I will serve as a leader. Therefore, I will

strive to read more literature on leadership on my own. I
will also attend leadership seminars to build on

my skills as well as take short courses.
