Despite gaining popularity,
supported employment, nevertheless, has some limitations as well. As stated by
Drake and Bond (2008) there are several shortcomings of this approach. First,
supported employment workshops are unable to motivate people with psychiatric
disabilities to work. Second, it is not possible for everyone who receives
supported employment to be placed in a competitive job. Third, those PWDs that
do get competitive jobs are unable to sustain their jobs due to low work
productivity issues, work related stress and frequent absences. Fourth, even
after getting placed in a sustainable job many PWDs continue to remain in the
disability system for the purpose of keeping health insurance coverage. Lastly,
the implementation of supported employment in US is slower than expected, the
main reason today is funding and organizational mission and policy. To
eradicate the above mentioned barriers professionals in the vocational rehabilitation
counseling discipline agreed on the following: policies should be updated,
service providers should be retrained, further research should be conducted and
funding mechanisms should be streamlined. Even though supported employment is
not a perfect model of vocational rehabilitation practice, it can be corrected
to produce employment outcomes that result to be better than other approaches.

The implications or effects of
supported employment programs are also discussed in this study by collecting
data of populations on which this program has been applied, it has been seen
that consumers of supported employment service enjoy many benefits such as, an
increase in wages, a decline in the cost of mental health services less reliance
on benefit payment, a reduction in per client cost of services, and an increase
in the number of hours worked (Rogers et al., 1995). Furthermore, in many
studies it has been seen that that supported employment is a favorable vocational
rehabilitation practice for people with schizophrenia and severe mental
disorders. Competitive employment rates were found to be higher in the
participants of supported employment service rather than the nonparticipants
with a ratio of 56% and 19% respectively.

Both sides share similar points of view
regarding what benefits supported employment could actually bring, such as alleviating
social stigmas, enhancing self-worth, improving financial status, increasing a
sense of control of one’s life, developing interpersonal relationships, and
raising the quality of life. Pogoda et al. (2011) encouraged a growing interest
for future qualitative studies of barriers to supported employment
implementation. By listening to both rehabilitation clients and the program
staff, researchers will be able to understand the context in a global setting. It
would be valuable if the research results can be generalized to the general
population rather than to a specific group.

CONCLUSION:                                                                   

In conclusion to this study it is
stated that supported employment approach has been practiced since a very long
time and researchers have studied and documented its strengths and weaknesses
and the implementation and the success of this approach domestically and
internationally depends on how well the rehabilitation professionals can capitalize
on the strengths and respond to the weaknesses of this involvement. As the
authors have mentioned in their study Bond et al. (2001) has pointed out,
stakeholders in vocational rehabilitation such as the government, program
administrators, supervisors, and rehabilitation clients and their families, all
have to make efforts to overcome implementation barriers, and to polish and
improve supported employment constantly in order to help people with disabilities
succeed in the workplace. Lastly to recap Lemaire and Mallik’s (2008) understanding,
it is essential that rehabilitation counselors should keep in mind that people
with disabilities do not just need employment but meaningful employment, which
is influential in structuring their self-confidence and thus a more worthy goal.
