Technology has
become a quintessential part of our daily life. There is hardly anything that
was made without technology being involved. Hence, architecture could not be
opted out of this modern age phenomenon either. The impact of digital design
and information technology in architecture is obvious. Architectural design and
construction are profoundly depending on new technology. The traditional
architecture design education and practice has dramatically transformed its
paradigm and orientation in theoretical and conceptual assumptions.

 

 Architectural training and practicing have dramatically
influenced by computerised programs and digital technology. For example, in
many architecture schools, digital studios have been replacing drafting tables
with computers, pinning boards were replaced by projectors. Paperless studios
and virtual design presentation are now the new way of architectural teaching
and practicing. Specifically, University of Kent has introduced their Computer
Labs where computers are replacing drafting tables and tracing paper; ‘Digital
Crit Space,’ where architecture students are encouraged to use big screen TVs
to present their works instead of pinning up drawings. Architectural
collaborations also benefit from new networking technology. For instance, a
project in Milan, Italy can be designed and get all the designs done in
Philadelphia, USA without the need of the architects being on site. All can be communicated and
transferred through the click of the mouse.

In Kolaveric’s
book “Architecture in The Digital Age” (2003), he stated: “The
use of digital modeling (3D) and animation (4D) software has opened new
territories of formal exploration in architecture, in which digital-generated
forms are not designed conventionally.” Indeed, Extraordinary
architectural designs and fabrications were produced using new digital
techniques and computational tools. The introduction of smart object and
algorithms in digital expansion has contributed to the development of
“intelligent buildings” which are energy efficient and environmental
friendly.

 

Digital
technology also helps to eliminate the barrier between design and production
that had existed since the beginning of architecture. With the assistance of
new technologies, the line between what we can imagine, design and what our
idea can be built is becoming blurred and nearly seamless.  Now, we can understand everything about our
design, from material to construction before it even gets constructed. There is
almost nothing we ever wish to perform on the design that cannot be
established.

 

In short, the
influences of digital technology on architectural disciplines are enormously
evident. However, in this dissertation, we will analyse the different
approaches in the early stages of architectural design process, to the outcome.
Accompanied by a thorough primary research on how today’s architectural
training and practicing rely on technology compared to an early period, which
learned from traditional tools. The findings will conduct the answer to whether
the digital tool will manipulate our original ideas or we have the control over
them. The conclusion will also give the prediction of the future of
architectural design.
