The Vietnam War was between the years 1954 to 1973. The name of the war was first called the Second Indochina War. This was the name before the United States got involved. The cause for this war was a fight between communist North Vietnam and its southern allies. This was Viet Cong, versus South Vietnam and its allies. One of Southern Vietnam’s allies was the United States. This was a very important allie to the Southern part of Vietnam. A man named Ho Chi Minh. This was the leader of North Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh had a very strong wanting to remove French from the hold on South Vietnam. His plan was to reunite the whole entire country. The result of the war ended up spanning across nearly two decades. This was was extremely costly. This goes for both financially and in the number of lives lost. The Vietnam War sadly resulting in almost 60,000 American deaths and closely to two million Vietnamese deaths. Years and years after the war, countless Vietnam veterans suffered from a serious posttraumatic stress disorder. In almost every aspect of their life, things have been different. The meaning of a Posttraumatic stress disorder is an illness that can happen to anyone who has lived and been through a horrifying experience. It has been told in all forms of literature and films the brutality of the war. The war comes with many side effects people struggle to live with. The history of Vietnam is surprisingly long and complicated. This war leads many people to ask questions. “When I first arrived in Vietnam, I thought the war could not be won but it was worth trying” (cite). This was a quote from a former soldier that fought in Vietnam war. Soldiers knew that the battle would be difficult. The war was mostly fought in a jungle. Vietnamese men were trained to fight in this condition. They were prepared with their supplies and places to hide. The United States soldiers on the other hand, were not prepared. People back home in the United States were confused why their soldiers were even fighting in the war. Vietnam was very for from them and it was a small place. “Unlike the first and second was, Vietnam is now more of a political than military story”.(cite) The Vietnam War is longed known as the longest battle in the history of America. This war is also one of the first defeats the American soldiers had received. It was also one of the first wars to be televised. During this war American policy was very unclear. In result, this led soldiers to have confusion. ” Is the conflict a case of international aggression or is it a revolution aided from the outside”. (cite) There were many questions people asked about this war. What was the main reason for it being fought. Many think that a cause of the Vietnam War began as a result of the United Stated strategy of containment. This was during the Cold War. The Cold War mainly aimed to prevent the spread of communism throughout the world. The Vietnam War was a long and very costly ongoing conflict. The divisive war that was extremely unpopular at home. It ended with the withdrawal of many U.S. forces in 1973. More than 3 million people, including 58,000 Americans, were killed in the conflict. The Gulf of Tonkin incident had greatly increased the United State’s involvement. This was in Vietnam. In August of 1964, Viet Cong patrol boats attacked the destroyer ship. The ship was called the U.S.S. Maddox. This act form Vietnam lead to an authorization to President Johnson to “take all necessary measures.” This was said to break communist aggression. Johnson ordered the troops to only bombing of North Vietnam. This sadly led to the Vietcong attacking the American installations in South Vietnam. Every colony had its own specific ambitious dreams. These dreams mainly were about becoming free and independent. Vietnam wanted the same. Vietnam was a French colony since the 1800’s all the way until the 1950’s. For change there had to be at least one person to start an uprising. The first man to protest against the French government was a man named Phan Boi Chan. He did this in the year 1908. Chan continued his protests with the a heart full of hope that the Vietnamese people would soon become liberated. After years and years of his protests, the all of the French government officials within Vietnam came to an agreement to put Chan on house arrest. This occured in 1925. Chan then remained on house arrest until his death which was in 1940. All in all, the Vietnam war was a huge part of history. Regardless of the loss that America had went through, the war will always be remembered. This war had many ups and downs. Many pros and cons varied. There was many events that led up to the Vietnam War. Problems with French and Vietnam mainly started the war. After the United States got involved, it went downhill fast. Many wonder why united States got involved, but there are many answers to this question. The Vietnam war was a very important moment in history.
