The This is demonstrated by the decline

The
issue regarding setting up a universal healthcare system has sparked many
debates in the United States. In order to achieve a universal healthcare system
in the United States, every citizen has to have some form of health insurance
regardless of their class. There are various pros of requiring U.S. citizens to
have health insurance that can benefit the United States as well as cons which would
prevent the United States from advancing. The benefits of requiring all U.S.
citizens to have insurance are that it would provide people of lower economic status
medical help even if they cannot afford it, and it would significantly improve
the health of those who live in low income areas. The disadvantages of
requiring every U.S. citizen to have healthcare would be the decline of the
quality of healthcare that would result as well as an increase in wait times
since more would be treated at any given time; which would not solve the
healthcare issues the U.S. citizens who are in the lower class are facing.

Requiring all U.S. citizens to have
some form of health insurance ensures that people who cannot afford healthcare
can have access to it despite their income. A significant number of adults in
the United States remain uninsured due to the high cost of healthcare. This is
demonstrated by the decline of the number of uninsured adults in the United States
once the Affordable Care Act was passed. According to findings by the National
Center for Biotechnology Information, “since the Affordable Care act became
law, the uninsured rate has declined by 43% from 16.0% in 2010 to 9.1% in 2015.”
(
) The decrease in the number of people from the Affordable Care
Act is representative of the statement that people are willing to use
healthcare if they can afford it. By providing everyone in the United States
with healthcare, people of lower income can take the steps they need to make
sure their health is up to standard. An additional benefit that would result
from allowing U.S. citizens to have healthcare is the overall increase in
health in low income areas that would result from people having access to the
healthcare they need. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School and the
Cambridge Health Alliance reveals that death is more likely to occur in
Americans who do not have health insurance due to the lack of treatment
available to them for various health conditions. Through studying national
surveys from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “researchers at
Harvard School and Cambridge Health Alliance assessed death rates after taking
into account education, income and many other factors . . . and estimated
that lack of health insurance causes 44,789 excess deaths annually.” (  ) From this
study, a conclusion can be made that deaths can be prevented in the United
States, specifically in low income areas, by requiring every citizen to have
insurance in order to get access to healthcare.

            Although there are
numerous benefits of requiring all United States citizens to have healthcare,
there are certain cons that can be considered. One disadvantage is that it
would cause a shortage of healthcare providers which would in turn make it
harder for people in the lower class to find healthcare. The U.S. Government
Accountability office found that “states cited a general shortage of providers .
. . and in . . . 2008 and 2009, less than 4 percent of beneficiaries who had
Medicaid coverage for a full year reported difficulty obtaining medical care.”
(     ). Since there will be more visits
to the hospital as a result of every U.S. citizen having health insurance,
there will be less providers able to take care of the growing amounts of
patients. This would limit patients in low income areas who want urgent care at
times where healthcare providers are filled with patients because those
healthcare providers will not be able to accept any more patients.
