The ability to communicate effectively can be a challenge as the message still be misunderstandings due to differences of culture and ethic. Poor communication can lead to the poor performance of organization to the company and business sector. As example, Nokia was the largest mobile phone manufacturer. It fell in the market and struggled to make a good idea for the product. There is no communication that focus on discussions about strategy planning to bring the new phone models to the market.(Boris Groysberg and Michael Slind, 2012) When society becomes more and more broadly connected and communicated to the world without restrictions as well as across cultural boundaries, the ability to communicate is increasing. Communication is very important for business as it clearly explains how their products and services differ from competitors. Successful companies able to communicate cross-cultures have a high competitive advantage as they can devote more time and resources to doing business and have noissues on internal and external communication. Communication is also important to individual to express themselves and to fulfil basic needs. It is also equally important to businesses, governments, and countries. If there is no ability to communicate and understand each other, there will be a problem. Communication based on cultural understanding is more appropriate to prevent misunderstanding caused by personal tendencies and prejudices.To illustrate the importance of communication on building relationships globally we can take the example of the United States and South Korea. In 1884, The United States became the first company to buy property in Korea. Previously, no foreigners were allowed to live inside Seoul. Despite significant cultural differences, South Korea and the United States have developed a communication process that other countries are trying to imitate. The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea was established in 1953 with the primary aim of promoting trade and commerce progress between Korea and the United States. (Lowell, 2012)There are four components of intercultural communication which should be highlighted which are global view, social media, communication competence and social, political and culture values. Firstly, importance intercultural communication in the global view of the world is the situation of communication itself for example the topic preference to be talked. American, they usually talking with friend casually with the “small talk”. Small talk can included the jobs, weather, sports, latest movies and people one knows. They avoiding to discuss the controversial topic like religion and politics unless with the people one knows. In verbal interaction, American usually talk for short periods during conversation because it is considered impolite to dominate conversations. In nonverbal communication, Americans will look into the listener’s eyes and then slightly look away during speaking to the individual. Secondly, the role of social media in the intercultural communication such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs, forums, wikis and others. Social media are used for several reasons. Firstly, they serve as a tool to communicate with other individuals. For instance, Facebook has allowed people from all over the world to represent themselves in a certain way and stay connected in cyberspace. It is clear that the flexibility of information submitted and shared in social media will directly affect, either positively or negatively, the development of cultural interconnection within a virtual community through the creation of a private connection network. The potential of social network education in intercultural communication, the use of Facebook as a social tool to help social aspects shift from school to university.Thirdly, the impact of intercultural communication on communication competence. Intercultural communication competencies are the ability to communicate accurately and effectively in various cultural contexts. In general, research findings support the view that cultural competence is a combination of one’s capabilities as an individual such as empathy, flexibility, self-awareness, open thinking, suitability, language skills, knowledge culture and others as well as relevant to the variation of the same context as the goal , perceptions about equality, incentives and agency perception. Communication competence can be divided into three level that are individual system, episodic system and relation system. Individual in communication competence was represent as individual process understanding, ethical understanding, interpersonal sensitivity and communication skills. (Annegret F. Hannawa & Brian H. Spitzberg , 2015) Individual systems have characteristics as competent individuals in normative social terms such as improving confident communicators, enhancing trust in kindness, improving disposition approaches, increasing cost or benefit relative increase, increasing motivator communication.The system episodes include actors that show the effect of efficiency into the specific part of the cofactor in some episode interactions such as in communicator status, motivation, knowledge, skill increase, contextual barrier to improving actor performance. The relational system evaluates one’s competency across the entire relationship and not one episode of the interaction provided. Given the fulfilment of autonomy and intimacy needs to be improved, mutual attractiveness increases, enhances mutual trust, access to social support enhancement, enhances integration network integration, and enhances competence competencies. (William B. Gudykunst & Bella Mody, 2002)Lastly, the impact intercultural communication on social, political and culture values. Political, economic, cultural, and social changes caused by globalization have influenced general communication and communication among different people in particular. At the present time, globalization means disclaimer to cultural change to new opportunities for cultural and cultural dialogue but globalization also creates the survival traditions culture that must be strengthened with the aim of maintaining national culture and especially the possibility of national culture, the national identity to survive in the world of globalization. To implement efficient intercultural communication, one must understand and focus more on cultural identity. Cultural identities that refer to one’s status in one group include six components: career, class, geography, philosophy, language, and biology. (Essays, UK, 2013)In addition, there are also common intercultural communication that we are usually encountered in our life such as in field of education, business and medicine. In the education field, intercultural communication has become important as schools become more diverse in terms of culture. In his work, Roux (2002) argues that successful educators are effective communicators and therefore cultural insights in cross-cultural meetings. Therefore, teachers should be sensitive to the result of potentially problematic intercultural communication in culturally diverse classes. Communication can be a useful source of knowledge among cultures and mutual enrichment among the various student cultures if proactively managed by teachers. Otherwise, communication can be a source of frustration, misunderstanding, conflict between cultures and eventually school failure. Hence, cultural communication links are complex and potentially problematic in education.In the business field, business sector is the most affected on the issues of intercultural communication. Today with the emergence of multinational corporations and global companies, it is impossible to do business without crossing cultures on a crossroads. Targowski and Metwalli (2003) see this millennium as an era where global organizations will focus on the critical value of cross communication processes, effectiveness and efficiency and cost of doing business. In order to successfully communicate cross cultural cultures, knowledge and understanding of cultural factors such as values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours should be obtained. Effective cross-cultural communication in the global economy provides pragmatic tools on how to define strategic communication, train representatives and conduct business discussions to achieve success.Intercultural communication is also an important component in medicine. For example, little is known whether healthcare professionals communicate effectively with minority ethnic patients. Not only are language problems, but also cultural differences in beliefs and understanding of the disease can cause problems in intercultural communication (Van, Harmsen and Bruijnzeels, 2002). Prasad and Darrad(2003) note that communication with non-English patients is still unsatisfactory and requires more research to address some obstacles in communication between cultures. Some of the recommendations proposed by Prasad and Darrad to healthcare workers are that one should have training on the proper use of the interpreter, using pictures to explain the concept to the patient, demonstrating through body language but do not use the same motion as they have different cultural significance, and longer appointment schedules with patients who may have language or cultural barriers so the interaction is not in a hurry.In the nutshell, an increase in international business requires operators to understand the multicultural skills of communication and cross-cultural. Obviously, cultural identity as an integral part of inter-cultural business communication is a key factor to be taken into consideration by the company when they are in the development market and negotiating business. Thus, the components of cultural identity such as classes, geographic care have attracted the attention of the company. The good intercultural communication skills requires a willingness to accept differences and adapt it wisely.
