TITLEA famous Philosopher once said,”if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”The author integrated the use of symbols into the characters descriptions and environment. The symbols reflected the current events that were occurring throughout the novel.Being capable of understanding such concepts forces the reader to think conceptually and changes their point of view of the author’s placement of certain items in the text.”In Lord Of The Flies” by William Golding, the use of symbolism is constantly used and connects with his own experience as the book revolves around what he experienced during the war.He uses the sense of symbolism to install fear, conflict, and instability throughout the boys experience on the island.A important symbol that William has used and clearly states its purpose is the pig’s head on a stick. The pig’s head is described gruesomely and violently.Golding uses such words as,”dim-eyed”, “grinning faintly”, “blood blackending between the teeth”, and a” obscene thing”.That scene becomes a turning point in the book as the tone of the story becomes evil and dark. Ralphs encounter with the beast reveals that it isn’t a external force and as the pig stated that the beast is apart of Ralph, intangible and impossible to physically hunt.”Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill! Ö You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you?”(143),At the end of the chapter the readers are then informed that the beast is the evil within mankind and their society begins to fall apart.Another symbol that relates to the pig head is the beast. Most of the boys have claimed of seeing the beast as being something physical and tangible. However it represents the evil and manipulative force in the boys that leads to the downfall of their civilization. With that being said Simon was the first Individual to catch onto the idea of the beast being fictional as he tells the boys,”Maybe, Ö maybe there is a beast ,What I mean is maybe it’s only us”(183).In response the boys immediately outburst with rage and argument as they thought Simon made no sense. The boys’ fear of the beast and their ironic desire to kill it shows that the hold which society’s rules once had over them has been loosened during the time they have spent without supervision on the island. The degeneration of the boys way of life is also very evident through their masks. When covered with their clay masks, the hunters form new personalities as they forget the rules and humanity that they once strictly abide by daily. When Jack first paints his face he forms a savage mindset as shown in the following sentence:”He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling. He capered toward Bill, and the mask was a thing of its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness”(64).Jack wouldn’t act such a way in his hometown but he feels free and capable of doing anything and being whoever or whatever he wants when he has the mask on as his old self leaves his body and mind and is overtaken by a unrecognizable source. In conclusion ,Golding repeatedly uses the symbol of the beast and pig head on a stick to represent the theme of In Lord Of The Flies” by William Golding, the use of symbolism is constantly used and connects with his own experience as the book revolves around what he experienced during the war.His personal references from the conflict and the characters personalities.
