Topic many articles that shows its contribution

Topic and
purpose

I
chose this topic because I’m interested in the future of technology in the
United States’ health care system. There is no doubt in the benefits of
technology in the United States health care system. Technology has
revolutionized the United States Health Care system and made it indispensable
when improving Americans’ health and quality of life. Its reputation sometimes
led many to believe that it’s necessary when it comes to providing quality of
care. There are various articles that show the benefits of technology in the
United States Health Care System. There are also many articles that shows its
contribution to the rising costs in the United States health care system due to
its association to quality of care. However, there is not a research that
measure people’s association of technology to quality care.

Research
question

The
research question is “Do millennials at Mary Baldwin University associate
technology with quality of care?  The
research topic was developed through previous research and articles on
technology in healthcare. There has been numerous studies and research that
expressed concerns of technology contributing to the rising costs of health
care in the United States. Other factors such as people’s perception and
association of technology to quality of care might contribute to these rising
costs. My research will explore whether millennials at Mary Baldwin University
associate technology with quality care. I chose to focus on millennials at Mary
Baldwin University because it will provide a background such as ethnicity,
major, year and overall number of millennials at Mary Baldwin University that
associate technology to quality of care. The results of the survey will show
whether a specific year group, college, ethnicity and age group associate technology
to quality care.

Since
there have been many studies that projected the increase costs of technology in
the United States healthcare system in the next few years, and with the amount
of millennial entering the workforce and potentially becoming the leaders of
our future society, it is more significant to conduct my research on
millennials instead. There has been many empirical research on millennials that
portray them as having different values and attitudes compared to older
generations. There has been a research that found that millennials use
technology differently than the older generations. This is because millennials
were exposed to technology at an earlier age therefore, they are more
proficient at it. Knowing that millennials use technology differently and are
proficient at it than older generation can have a two different effects on my
research question.

Quality
of care have different meanings, most people think that quality care is being
care by doctors courteously or having the doctor spend a lot of time with them.
Many healthcare websites define quality care differently. According to  Institute of Medicine (IOM),  ”Quality of care is the degree to which
health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of
desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge’

Research
methodology

                The methodology which will be
used to answer the research question include the survey which is the main
primary source. A survey will be made and administered to students from all
classes at Mary Baldwin University. An approval from the IRB will be obtained
before conducting the survey. The answers obtain from the surveys will be used
to answer the question. Yes!

Secondary
sources includes peer-reviewed journal articles, textbooks from other courses
in health care administration (Essentials of the health care system) will be
used to describe the reason why the research is being conducted. It will also
provide background information on technology and millennial in general.
Secondary sources will be acquired through the Mary Baldwin University Library
and databases including JSTOR, JAMA, and CDC. The keywords “millennials”
“technology” “quality care” “health care” will be used to find any necessary
secondary source for my research.

Tools
of analysis which will be used include quantitative analysis of the data will
be collected. The survey will be made on Google docs and will be send out to
students that are interested in taking it. If enough responses weren’t
collected, additional steps will be taken to obtain the necessary data needed
for the research. This include setting up a table in hunt to collect the
data.  During lunch, students will be
approached and be asked to answer the survey in return for a treat. The process
will be done after enough data is collected. The data collected during the
survey will be used in the research in a way that it will organize the answers
provided on graphs based on major, ethnicity, age and class.

The
first and main graph will describe an overall number of millennials who either
agree or disagree with technology providing the best quality care. Four graphs
will show millennials who believe in quality care and agree to technology
providing the best quality care based on college, ethnicity, age, class, year
and college. There will be five graphs overall with description of each graph
at the bottom of the page. An analysis of the graphs will be provided in the
discussion portion of the project.

Significance of
topic to the field of HCA

This topic was chosen because of it high
significance to the field of HCA. The United States is known for having a large
number of people who lack health insurance. This is because many Americans
can’t afford the premiums that are provided by private health insurance
companies. The costs of health care is expected to grow in these next few
years. This alarming increase costs is often blamed on the large use of medical
technology in the US healthcare system. There is no doubt that technology has
improved not only the US health care System but also many countries around the
globe. The United States particularly is known for research and innovation in
medical technology. The growth of technology in health care has often been a
blamed issue of the rising costs of health care in the United States. This is
due to people’s association of technology to quality care in our healthcare
system. For example, patients often assume that the latest technological
innovations represent the best quality care. This perception put a lot of
pressure on physician to try the latest gadgets. Even hospitals compete on
basis to adopt the latest equipment which makes it harder for insurance
companies to lower their premiums.  There
is a concern that people’s association of technology to quality care indirectly
contribute to the rising costs of health care. This research will prove whether
this association is true by mainly focusing on millennials.
