Whanau – birth date and family.
Related to family, close as well as extended, 3 to 4 generations of
extended family such as great grandparents ,grandparents ,parents ,brothers
,sisters ,their husbands and wives and children’s and they divide the
household responsibilities .It is important in health because it helps in
empowering the entire whanau to develop a health plan for the future.  Empowerment of the family is done as a

Whenua

Whenua –land and placenta
According to Maori health (hauora) ,whenua or placenta
,when a baby is born in Maori family ,there custom is to bury placenta in the
earth .in Maori custom people believe that land is the mother so when they
bury placenta it connects them with the land .For Maori land is very
important part of life because it connects them together and it is a source
of identity . They also believe that people came from land and they return to
earth. The living generations act as a guardian of the land whereas the
living ancestors where before them. The Maori’s tend to look at health as
involving the land and environmental well-being. It protects the health
through tapu, noa and rahui that protects water supplies, food sources and

Tinana – physical health
– Refers to the capacity for physical health and
development. Maori physical well-being is considered as spiritual, emotional
and family well-being. It is also consists of how Maori makes healthier

healthier lives . In order to make healthier choice Maori to start in
thinking about some of the most common disease and how it can be prevented
such as disease like diabetes, cancer .Tinana can also refer to the physical
environment where socio-economic factors example employment ,housing and

Wairua

Wairua – spirits and ancestors -has been identified as
being the most important requirement for health. It is believed that without
a spiritual awareness, an individual can be considered to be lacking in
wellbeing and more ill health. The breakdown of this relationship could be
seen in terms of ill health or lack of personal identity.
Maori always have significance of spirituality for
wellbeing. For Maori people they believe what they are today is because of
their ancestors .They believe that they are always blessed with their
ancestors and they are always around them and guide them .Wairau also
reflects the relationship with the land , mountains ,river has identity for

Hinengaro

Hinengaro – feelings and thoughts -refers to thoughts,
feelings and behaviour which are vital to well-being
It is to taking care of emotional health for everyone,
either it is mental, physical or emotional. Maori believe that everything is
in the mind and to keep a person healthy therefore they should have healthy

Whakapapa – relates to genealogy or family tree .For Maori

foundation with ancestors and it continues with generation by generation .It
is important in health because whakapapa (genealogy) is created from tribe to
tribe .Whakapapa  is also believed that
it has deep connection to the land and ancestors .Whakapapa may be required
as adaption situations where information may be of benefit to the Maori’s
health and well-being

Kaitiakitanga

Kaitiakitanga – known
as guardianship, it can be a person
or group of people that cares for an area such as a river, land, forests to
look after and cherish everything that have been left behind from their
ancestors  for the future generation .It
relates to actions that ensure as sustainable future for all people.
According to hauora it’s referred to spiritual. According to Maori view people are very closely connected to
land and natures are living. Life is connected
and to understand the world, one must understand the connections and

Whanaungatanga
– Maori values wide range of
relationships, like family and friendships .According to Maori they belief that the more
relationships people have in their lives the happier and healthier they are.
A sense of being connected to the community through relationships is at the
core of the good life that is why Maori people are connected to one another and those who become part of
Maori family they are treated as
their own family member. Maori group is quite
different from the many others in this universe. Their learning progressed
much more quickly, the evenings were filled with more laughter and sharing
their conversations more open and supportive which relax them and their

Manaakitangi

Manaakitangi is known as hospitality, showing kindness,
treating people with respect. Maori way of caring about others, support them
and make them feel home and love them. While visiting Maori at their home (Marae),
it is important provide sufficient time for welcoming and refreshment that
they may offer .Providers should be familiar with cultural food for their
patients because Maori have an important role in their health .Their cultural
acceptance is the person who is responsible for shopping or cooking family
