Where we are in place and time: an inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, individuals and civilisations, from local and global perspectives. Drama conveys space and time by adding by using the space. This space can be used to make the piece of theatre larger and much more area to perform in. Drama creates a perspective that shows a change of time through the same idea, for example, a recreation of a Shakespeare plays in a modern world. Art can communicate ideas such as a moral or story which can have an impact on what we do after. It sometimes is there for pleasure and sometimes there as a lesson. Drama helps us understand the change and different times without us being there. Art makes us feel what people felt like 100s of years ago. It helps us tell the difference between before and after, the change that has taken place over the few years.
My practitioner is Brecht. Bertolt Brecht was a German national born in 1898. He served Germany in WW1 as a medical orderly. Brecht went in search of a career in theatre in Munich and Berlin. However, his career was cut short because of the upcoming Nazi rule. He fled Germany and moved to the US. Many diverse writers influenced Brecht and Chinese Theatre also influenced practitioners like Karl Marx and Pablo Picasso.
Brecht came up with the idea of the V effect which is mainly alienation. His style was called Epic Theater. It consists of many techniques such as breaking the 4th wall, which means communication to the audience. It also had narration involved in the act. It even had third person narration. Brecht started including speaking stage directions while performing, giving direct addresses also and he even used placards to perform. The turmoil of the times through which Brecht lived gave him a sharp political voice. The opposition he faced is a testament to the fact that he dared to express his voice in the world of the theatre. He also had an original and inspired talent to bring out a dynamic theatrical style to express his views.
A firm devotee in the use of theatre as an instructional medium, Brecht…sought to prevent audiences from becoming too tangled emotionally with the events represented on stage. He considered it a discreditable waste of the theatre’s resources to mesmerise an audience and purge its emotions through identification with the characters and situations. All such empathic theatrical experiences he identified as ‘Aristotelian.’ He called theatre that existed solely to give sensual pleasure without provoking socially meaningful thought ‘culinary.’ Theatre should inform the spectator; it should make him ponder the drama’s Marxist implications–the need for societal change stress added.” Samuel L. These artworks show us an act of knowledge, passion, and an understanding of different topics such as war, love, peace. The message we get through Brecht work was that he lost people important in his life and therefore ended his own.
The main idea of Brecht act was to show that it is tough to lose someone and that it can take you to new lengths in life.
The play I have chosen is The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui Brecht himself writes the play. The satirical play creates an equivalent between the career of the Nazi leader and the rise of a fictional Chicago gangster, Arturo Ui. In a memo in his journal for March 10, 1941, Brecht pragmatic that he was “thinking of the American theatre, again struck by the idea I once had in New York, of writing a gangster play, which would recall few events accustomed to us all (the gangster play we know).” The latter, of course, referred to the career and coming to power of Hitler.
The scene follows the hard work of UI, a thug down on his luck, to worm his way into and eventually govern the vegetable trade in Chicago, and elsewhere. Times are hard for the “cauliflower trust,” a group of a factory owner (Flake, Caruther, Butcher, Mulberry and Clark).
Overall this has helped me gain a lot of understanding as too how to go about my plan as an IB learner which I can use a current historic event and alter it in a way I would like.
