Each genre including blues, Early Rock and Roll, folk rock, heavy metal, glam rock, funk, disco, punk, grunge, and hip hop/rap has had its own effects on the way the music is performed and understood today. The artists from these genres of music of each taken their own influence of music and created what brought them out as a person. Each genre and artist has their own outfits, styles, performances, and crowds of people who listen to them. Some of the most influential artists of all time come from these genres. Rosetta Tharpe was born in Arkansas on March 10, 1915 and immediately started performing with her mother at a very young age. At the age of four she would play the guitar for her mother on stage and by the age of six she became a regular part of the performance. Her first performances with her mother were at a church and later her and her mother began traveling and performing. In 1938 she signed with Decca records and recorded four songs, one being “The Man and I”. All four songs became instant hits, this was Decca’s first time signing with gospel music and Rosetta was the first successful gospel singers. Rosetta is now credited for making gospel music popular in the 30s and 40s. Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Missouri. He began his career singing in the town he grew up in and after high school signed and recorded his first song for the Sun Studios. Sam Phillips carried him at this time and helped him record his first hit song “Heartbreak Hotel”. In 1956 he began his career as an actor as well. He was now being seen on the radio, television, and big screen. He then was drafted into the military but when he came back he picked right back up where he started. He is now known as the “King of Rock n’ Roll” and is still one of the most famous Rock n’ Roll singers of all time. Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941 in Minnesota. Bob began performing and playing his folk rock music at a young age and carrying his talent on all the way through college. Bob Dylan signed for the first time in 1961 and was immediately known for his influential voice in the American popular music. Bob Dylan is now known for having the most influential songwriting and singing of all time. He is still performing today and taking tours. Bob Dylan has received many Grammys, Academy and Golden Globe awards. Alice Cooper was born on February 4, 1948 in Detroit. In high school he started a rock band that covered many of the beatles songs. After high school him and his band began performing in local bars and had changed their music to a dark, angry, and aggressive tone. Many people in the audiences did not like their style but Frank Zappa loved it. He asked the band to sign. By 1969, the group now had the reputation for their performances on stage and the style of their music. They were constantly bringing in crazy crowds to their concerts and always having a dark or creepy performance to put on while singing their songs. Jayne County whose original name was Wayne Rogers, was born in 1947 in Georgia. She is known as the first openly transgender singer and performer. She was a singer, songwriter, and actress for the past five decades. She is often known for her unpredictable and crazy stage performances. Jayne County has influenced the artist David Bowie, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Pete Burns, and Lou Reed. One of her most well known songs is “You Man Enough to be a Women”. One of the most influential hip hop/rap groups of all time were the Run DMC. They first began performing in 1981, they were one of the first bands in the hip hop/rap era that have both a gold and platinum album. The Run DMC was also one of the first to be nominated for a Grammy. They used record players to create new music and would skip around with the tracks to create new sounds. The band Run DMC played together until 2002 becoming one of the most well known bands of this era. The band Genesis plays music from the genre Progressive Rock or Prog Rock. In 1967, the band began forming in Godalming, Surrey but they had not started performing live and serious until 1975. What made the band so catchy and interesting was that they found a way to include multiple different genres into their music. In many songs you could hear a little bit of folk rock and others more of hard rock. They continued to change as the decades changed their style of music. They first began performing in England and Great Britain with their famous hit “Selling England by the Pound”, after getting their fame in these countries is when they decided to move to the United States in 1979 to continue their musical career. The funk music artist Rick James was born on February 1, 1948 and died on August 6, 2004. He was largely influenced by Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson. He began his career in music as a teenager in Buffalo, New York. After joining the Navy he began performing in Canada. After serving one year in prison after the military found out where he was while in the military. After he was released he  moved to California where he played with multiple different bands. In 1977 he signed with a Motown imprint, Gordy Records. In April 1978 he released his first album “Come Get It!” and sold over 2 million copies. Later he sued for credit of writing the song “U Can’t Touch This” and was later up for the Best R&B song Grammy for writing it. He was becoming so successful that he was beginning to be known as the “king of punk funk”. The three brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb put together their own band the Bees Gees in 1958 and began performing their disco music. They got their fame in the 1970s and wrote all of their songs and performed them. They also began writing songs for other artists as well. They received their first charting success in Australia with their single “Spicks and Specks”. In January of 1967 they returned back to the UK and their producer Robert Stigwood began promoting them to the worldwide audience. Recently in 2013 the Bees Gees had sold over 220 million records across the world. They are now one of the best selling music artists of all time. In 1997, they were given the honor of being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The new wave genre had a band named The Cure. The Cure was an english rock band that formed in 1976 in Crawley, West Sussex. The band had multiple new members throughout their career. One of their first debuts the single “Killing an Arab” was released in 1978, this song along with a few others hard a large impact of the development of the new wave and punk rocks genre. The bands music was extremely dark and creepy, as well as their style and looks. This became very popular for the gothic rock genre later. As of 2004 the band has sold 27 million records and released thirteen studio albums.The future of music will be influenced by these genres and styles for the rest of our lives. Each upcoming artists has their own artist that they listen to or look up to and will often base their style of music off of their idol. Since many people now often listen to multiple different types of genres the future music will begin to combine genres into one song creating a whole new sound.
